Downtown Santa Barbara announces winner of 2019 Holiday Window Decor Contest

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The Downtown Santa Barbara staff and decor committee members have chosen the winners of the Holiday Decor Window Contest on Thursday.

After observing 27 window displays from downtown businesses, the judges made a decision for this year’s winners.

The 2019 Award of Excellence goes to Chase Restaurant.

Other downtown businesses won in other categories:

  • Holiday Sparkle Award: 33 Jewels
  • Woodland Wonderland Award: Kaleidoscope Flowers
  • Dicken’s Holiday Award: Coast 2 Coast Collection
  • Holiday Classic Award: The Barber Shop
  • Best of Pop-Ups Award: The Cearnal Collective and Rincon Road

Officials say 33 Jewels “wowed” the judges with their sparkling decor. They elegantly and strategically used snowflakes, lights and hand-made flower panels to make their windows shine.

The Cearnal Collective got The Best of Pop-Ups Award for the best vacant storefronts decorated with holiday spirit, “Chairway to Heaven” with their use of the Tropical Holiday theme from this year’s Holiday Parade.

Chase Bar and Grill in Santa Barbara Changes Ownership

Chase Bar and Grill in downtown Santa Barbara has changed ownership with the help of Community West Bank and Cal Coastal.

Jackie Mathis is the new owner and George Merino was the restaurant’s former owner.

Mathis is a Camarillo resident who served in the U.S. Air Force, where he managed food and beverage operations. Merino was looking to spend more time with his family and Mathis wanted to try his hand in the restaurant business. The timing was right, Mathis said.

“The timing was never perfect. Now I’ve worked long enough and got old enough where the timing became perfect,” said Mathis, adding that buying an established business mitigated some of the risk.

Mathis does not have any major expansion or renovation plans, only some additions to the menu.

“What I intend to do is leave the tradition alone, it has been there 30 years as it is for a reason,” he said. “It is such an established landmark and has such a loyal following that all I need to do is provide my energy and a couple of new ideas.”

Goleta-based Community West worked with the nonprofit Cal Coastal, a loan provider and guarantor, to facilitate the change in ownership for the restaurant that has served Santa Barbara since 1979. Financing was secured through the Guarantee Loan Program, which promotes small businesses that create or retain jobs.

“Chase Bar and Grill is such a fixture on State Street,” said Bill Filippin, executive vice president and chief banking officer of Community West Bank, in a news release. “We were proud to partner with Cal Coastal.”

Community West, which has more than $600 million in assets, looks to debut a full-service branch later this year at 4464 Broad St. in San Luis Obispo— its first in San Luis Obispo County.

Cal Coastal predominantly provides 80 percent loan guarantees, similar to SBA loans, when a small businesses’ cash flow, collateral or guarantor aren’t strong enough to qualify for traditional loans.

The Salinas-based nonprofit had to close its Santa Barbara and Ventura offices during the recession and is left with its Santa Maria office. But business has increased for Cal Coastal over recent years as it looks to bolster its tri-county presence.

Veggie Finds at Chase Bar & Grill

Indulging in Eggplant Parmigiana at the State Street Mainstay

Eggplant Parmigiana

The longer you’re a vegetarian, the more you tire of always eating “light and healthy” — or, at the very least, of having salad as your only option when dining out with meat-eating friends as they enjoy richer dishes. But that’s not a problem at Chase Bar & Grill, a State Street mainstay since 1979, when the Caligiuri family brought its home-style Italian cooking to Santa Barbara all the way from New York. The restaurant is well known for quality meats and fish, but vegetarians can find a touch of indulgence in their eggplant parmigiana entree.

One of the original dishes from the first Chase menu, the eggplant is sourced locally from organic growers, lightly breaded, grilled then baked in a homemade marinara sauce, topped with mozzarella cheese, and served with a side of pasta. “This is one of our most popular dishes,” said owner George Merino, explaining that even the non-vegetarian diners are fans. “People have this idea of, ‘Oh eggplant? Ugh!’ But wait until you try it! It’s one of my favorites, one of my go-tos.”

The restaurant is very much a family affair, with Merino’s mother passing it on to him after running it herself for decades; additionally, the executive chef and bartender have been on board for more than 30 years. “My mom always says [the restaurant] is like an extension of her living room,” said Merino. And even though Chase Bar & Grill celebrates tradition and classic East Coast authenticity, they are happy to accommodate for dietary restrictions upon request. “People are much more sensitive to their diet now,” said Merino, who sees more special requests these days than ever before. “I think we’ve become healthier as a community.” The increase in demand may even lead to more veggie-friendly dishes in the future, Merino hinted, but for now, the eggplant parmigiana will make vegetarian diners content.
